Once a month on the Street Photography List there is a salon exhibition of photographs, geared towards a theme chosen by that week's adjudicator. The aim is for photographers to show either their older work or to go out and shoot something new to suit the theme.
The rules are very simple:
- An adjudicator picks a theme for each salon.
- The first Monday after the 15th of the month is Salon day. (Think 'the Ides of March'). That day everyone is welcome to add his/her link into the Salon Sticky topic thread that will be posted to the Streetphoto List on Friday or so. The added link should point to a single picture of their own, in response to the theme.
- "Monday" is midnight-to-midnight in the local time of the photographer. This means the ultimate deadline for submitting is noon (GMT) on Tuesday.
- As well as meeting the theme, the photograph should also be considered as "street photography", in whatever form the photographer understands that. Naturally, the adjudicator's interpretation of "street photography" carries ultimate weight.
- Everyone is welcome to post comments on the photos submitted in the main (sticky) Salon thread.
- Once Salon day has finished, the adjudicator chooses the most interesting picture (not posted by themselves!). Note, this is not the best, but the most interesting, however that word may be interpreted. The adjudicator must make the call by Thursday on their local time, but the review or any other text explaining the decision may be posted later.
- The adjudicator is under no obligation to do anything except pick a winner. Many adjudicators post an explanation of their decision, but there is no requirement to do so and certainly no requirement to comment on every picture.
- The photographer of this chosen picture becomes next salon adjudicator.
- The new adjudicator announces the new theme to the list as soon as possible, to give everyone a decent amount of time for shooting new pix or rummaging for old ones!
- The adjudicator may nominate another person, NOT NECESSARILY A LIST MEMBER, to take over partially or completely the duties of adjudicator for that month (they should privately make sure the person agrees before doing this).
- Due to the fact that SP suitable themes are limited and that the most interesting ones admit broad interpretation and execution, themes are allowed to be repeated. Adjudicators must avoid choosing a previously selected theme on consecutive salon days (the more separated its use the better), and photographers must participate with different pics at every new run of a theme.
