Out of the loop

Postby pswango » Tue Mar 02, 2010 10:19 pm

For some reason I haven't been receiving email notification from the Forum when new items are posted. The emails stopped sometime around 2/10, I think. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm not sure that the email notification works to just let you know about every post, but rather gets set on a thread by thread basis. You are probably better off following the list via the rss feed. I've got both running and rss shows me everything while email is basically just threads I've participated in in some way.
rss also gives you the body of the post while email ios just a notification.

That said, I sorely miss the days when this list was fully functional via email!

Jeez, Phil if you've been getting email notifications then you're way ahead of me. I've been trying to figure that out ever since JB moved the forum.

The closest I've gotten is running the RSS feed, which seems more confusing than just going to the forum itself.

Thanks, Alan. I'll check out the rss feed. Funny, though, because I just got an email notice of your response. I did notice that the email says "you will receive no more notices until you visit the topic", or some such. Could be that I didn't visit a topic after a notice and didn't realize it.

I just found out about this thread via an RSS feed of Phil's post; nothing of the previous posts has come down the pipe. And I too do mail notification as well; nothing on that side. So the RSS seems kind of spotty and the mail notification turns out to be downright inadequate, at least as far as I'd like to use it.

Just to be a contrarian, I get all my notifications of activity via the rss feed and I love it. I have the feed as a bookmark on my browser (Firefox), which displays a list of updates in chronological order, newest to oldest. (I don't bother with any news readers other than the one that's already built-in to Firefox) I know I'm getting everything because in the very rare instances when I actually log in to the forum, I never see anything I haven't already read. I definitely don't miss the days when I had to search through the piles of stuff in my inbox to see if there were new messages. The less email I have to deal with the better and for this kind of conversational stuff, I find the rss to be perfect.

My impression is that I get everything that gets posted through the rss feed. I'll have to look at putting it in a bookmark, which sounds handy. Old style email was the best, though. I just set up a filter in Eudora (yeah, still using Eudora) and that was it. Also, I had an off line archive, which has actually come in handy now and then.

Since you started this thread, Phil, I would expect that you would get at least one notice of any reply. Other than that, whi knows. The email notification in phpBB is minimal and not very intuitive.

I'm getting email notices for all the replies to this thread, as well as others. Back to the way it was before the email hiatus. I guess I just needed to jiggle the system.

Hi, Phil. If you want email notifications have a look at the bottom of the web page. If you're looking at the page for one of the forums there will be a "Subscribe to forum" link at the bottom. If you're looking at a page for a thread it will say "Subscrive to topic". Click on that and when a new post is made to the forum or thread you've subscribed to an email will be sent to the address you have on file in your account. However, you will only get one email per topic until you visit the web site and read the forum or thread you've subscribed to.

If you want a running stream of the conversations like used to happen when the list was email based and hosted off Topica then the best option is to subscribe to the RSS feed here:

http://www.streetphoto.info/forum/rss.php

However, in order to reply to a post you'll need to go back to the web site. The RSS posts come with a link directly to the thread in question, so it's pretty easy to do.
