OT (Unless a Valley is a Street)

Larry Sultan obit. He and his work are inseparably mixed into the myth of California I carry around with me, always. Toward the end of this piece is a quote from his father, regarding "Pictures from Home", that says a whole lot about the enterprise of photography, portrait work in particular.

Here's a dual purpose post: a) to follow-up on Larry Sultan and b) a heads-up that Alec Soth is blogging again

I think it was Kevin who turned me on to American Suburb X; if you're subscribed, you'll know that there have been three posts on Sultan there recently, the most recent containing some of Sultan's wonderful prose -- an excerpt from The Valley -- http://tinyurl.com/yawowc3

If I didn't mention it last time, I think Sultan's most recent work (sampled here -- http://tinyurl.com/y9a4v8j) is quite wonderful for its quiet focus and lack of mannerism.

Geez, Ed, there went my whole morning. I hadn't run across ASX before. What a great find. One of the pieces that really got me going was a 2006 interview with John Szarkowski called "Eyes Wide Open". Especially liked the way he sweetly skewered the interviewer with the same rapier he used to dissect half a century of photographic criticism.

Read it here:http://www.americansuburbx.com/2009/01/theory-eyes-wide-open-interview-with.html

I don't how much this adds to the Larry Sultan story, but I agree with the sentiment: Sultan should be better known. And with Mike Johnston's comment wishing there were a current book of his work available.
